Cricket is one of the oldest games in India. It has gained popularity among people very perfectly. Every third person of our country loves to watch cricket. whenever someone asks, ‘do you watch cricket?’ the most frequent replay that we get is ‘cricket is in my blood’. So, we can assume if someone says like this how much they love the game. Cricket started in 16th century Having originated in south-east England, it became the country's national sport in the 18th century and has developed globally in the 19th and 20th centuries. International matches have been played since 1844 and Test cricket began, retrospectively recognised, in 1877. India even before gaining Independence started playing test cricket from 1932. Field Hockey is considered as the national game of India, but also people are more into cricket rather than hockey. We can say that cricket is an overrated game in India, but we can do not deny its importance. It is also a way of revenue collection. Hockey, our national sports unfortunately followed a reverse trend. India 8 times Olympic Gold Medallist fell off the international radar roughly around the 80’s. Failing to adopt to the artificial turf and to the new rules which made the game far more physical, Indian hockey floundered and that resulted in a dip in its popularity. Playing hockey was no longer “cool” even in traditional centres. In the popularity of the role of BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) in remarkable, they have done very effective marketing of the game to get the visibility and the result of their hard work is in front of us. In this modern day the people who can not play cricket they too watch cricket, children are so much into this game from their primary school level they start play cricket. If we go and ask a child, he or she will defiantly recite the names of famous cricketers, but they hardly know something about hockey. Hockey is considered as our national game only in words, but the kind of audience and popularity hockey should have being a national game, the game is still not able to get that and give competition to cricket. Hockey is underrated yet, on the other hand cricket is getting spread day after day. Indian Premier League and T20 is main reason of it’s popularity. Whenever there is nay match between India and Pakistan then the fire is om peak. The people who do not watch cricket they also at that time just because India is competing with Pakistan. In the year of 2019 India and Pakistan attracted 229 million television viewers in India, accounting for over 60 per cent of the screen audience for the first three weeks of the World Cup in the cricket-crazy nation. Star India, the official broadcaster of the Indian Premier League (IPL), said 202 million viewers had logged on to its video streaming platform, Hotstar, to watch the 11th edition of the T20 tournament a 55.3% jump from last year. The rate of viewers is increasing rapidly. Cricket is not our national game but the love people have for cricket they do not have the same hockey, people do watch hockey as well but the much people admire cricket, hockey is not on the same level. So yes, we can say that cricket is an overrated game in India but the most interesting as well.
